Vehicles & Violins - 11 Years of Giving
One of Calgary’s most popular charitable galas of the year will take place on March 9th when the Calgary Motor Dealers Association will stage its 11th Annual Vehicles and Violins Gala in the Roundup Centre and Corral at Stampede Park. Since its inception in the year 2000, the Vehicles and Violins Gala has raised almost $2,000,000 for charity.
Guests attending the $150 + GST per person 2010 Gala will enjoy exclusive entertainment with musicians of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as delectable international cuisine, a selection of fine wines and a preview of the 2010 Calgary International Auto and Truck Show. In addition, a highly-popular silent auction will assist in raising money for charity through the offering of a wide variety of items from merchandise to trips and a host of others. And for the first time in the history of the event, a live auction will be held for the more competitive-minded of the gala patrons.
First staged in 2000, Vehicles and Violins raised $73,500 for the Heartstrings Program of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by a $41,000 donation in 2001. The 2001 event also provided $75,000 to the CMDA Entrance Endowment Fund at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology.
In 2002 the Calgary Motor Dealers Association selected the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta as its charity, providing them with more than $150,000. It followed that in 2003 by providing an additional $150,000 to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Prostate Cancer Institute of Calgary. The 2004 Gala raised more than $160,000 that was shared between The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, while the 2005 Gala raised more than $181,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT and Nunavut, and the Canadian Diabetes Foundation. Vehicles and Violins 2006 had as its charities the Calgary Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta, and set an all-time record for Vehicles and Violins with a donation of more than $200,000 to these charities.
Vehicles and Violins 2007 broke its record prior to that date when it raised $280,000, shared by the Alberta Adolescent Recovery Centre and the Missing Children Society of Canada, recognizing two of the best-known organizations in Alberta dedicated to issues affecting our most cherished resource – our children.
In 2008, Vehicles and Violins achieved even more, for the first time surpassing the $300,000 mark when it shared $301,000 between the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre and the Parkinson’s Society of Southern Alberta.
The 2009 Gala benefitted Alzheimer Society of Calgary and Hospice Calgary, two extremely deserving and worthwhile charities providing outstanding service to individuals and families in need in Calgary. These two charities shared almost $200,000.
For 2010, the ALS Society and the Calgary Cancer Foundation have been selected as the charities that will benefit from the Vehicles & Violins Gala.
